Cracked Corn

chicks eating their cracked corn
It's going to be a chilly night.  We put the girls to bed with some cracked corn in their crop.  The cracked corn keeps them warm during the night.  It raises their body temperature.

  1. Hi, I’m Anne from Life on the Funny Farm (http://annesfunnyfarm.blogspot.com), and I’m visiting from Tilly’s Nest.

I love giving my hens cracked corn as a treat. Whenever I'm calling them back into the henhouse after playtime, I always grab a handful of cracked corn and call, "Herrrrrrre, chick, chick, chick!" and they come waddling over fast as they can. I think they can drop the "corn" and just call it "crack".

Anyway, it’s nice to “meet” you! Hope you can pop by my blog sometime to say hi…

  2. Hi Annie, I'm Lori. I know exactly what you mean about the corn. The hens freak out if they see me go near the bag. We had a hen that was broody most of the summer. She would never come out of the nest box. But if she saw me get the cracked corn she was off that nest box and outside quicker than you can imagine.
I went on your blog today and I loved it. I'm sure I'll be visiting it regularly.
